The illustration is of me, hunched over a typewriter, and was drawn by my dad, Kevin Slattery (1954 – 2015). The original Slatts.
When he sketched this portrait, I was working in the medical records department at a Dublin TB hospital. (I was the entire medical records department, and my office was a trailer in a soggy field.) He visited me at work one day, spending my shift drawing and touring the hospital’s beautiful campus.
There was a lot of downtime on that job, which I occasionally filled by writing fiction on a mechanical typewriter — the most technologically advanced piece of equipment in my office. I vectorized this sketch for this website, though it cannot capture the blue-ink beauty of the original, which I have framed and hanging above my desk.
The layout, boxes, and font choices are derived from Dragon Warrior for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Dragon Warrior has a (deserved) reputation of being grindy and shallow, but it’s that very mindlessness that brings such comfort.
